Mark Sykes scored the only goal to secure the Robins’ first home win since 24 January.

The Blades created a host of chances after the break, with City’s on-loan Manchester United goalkeeper Radek Vitek producing a string of fine saves.

City climb to 11th, seven points off the top six with five matches remaining, while Sheffield United stay 17th.

It wasn't a particularly great first-half

Both sides managed a single shot on target in the first half, with the hosts making theirs count.

An intricate one-touch move ended with a sublime pass from midfielder Max Bird splitting the Blades defence.

Goalkeeper Adam Davies reached the ball ahead of Emil Riis, but his clearance fell to Sykes, whose right-footed effort from outside the area was threaded past three defenders into the bottom corner.

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder made two changes at the interval, introducing Gustavo Hamer and Andre Brooks, which sharpened their attacking threat.

Vitek palmed away a curling effort from Hamer before producing an excellent save to deny Brooks, then diving bravely at the feet of Patrick Bamford.

Bamford later spurned a golden opportunity, turning a delightful cross from Femi Seriki over the bar from six yards.

Vitek was called into action again, saving a looping header from defender Mark McGuinness.

It is now six matches without a win for Wilder’s side as they prepare to host promotion-chasing Hull City on Saturday.

Bristol City will look to maintain Hodgson’s perfect record, and secure a third straight win for only the second time this season, when they travel to Queens Park Rangers.
