Everton overcame an early scare to beat Crystal Palace and win their opening Premier League game for the first time in five years.

Goals from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Thierno Barry, either side of half-time, secured the points and gave the Blues their earliest victory of a new campaign since Rafa Benitez guided them to a 3-1 win over Southampton in August 2021.
It was also the first time in eight Premier League matches that David Moyes' side had claimed a victory, ending a bleak seven-game winless run that stretched back to the end of last season.

It has taken the best part of 12 months, but Everton are finally beginning to feel at home at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

On the eve of the new Premier League season, Blues manager David Moyes compared his side's first campaign at their new, state-of-the-art home on the banks of the River Mersey, which yielded only six wins from 19 league games, to moving into a new house with little more than the wallpaper on the walls.
By the end of an impressive opening-day performance, albeit one that came with its share of scares, Moyes could perhaps start to feel that victories are becoming part of the furniture in Everton's new home.
It was hardly an ideal beginning for Everton, who remain without a natural right-back, but Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's influence, combined with a couple of superb saves from Jordan Pickford, helped them negotiate a difficult first half. Eddie Nketiah and Jean-Philippe Mateta both struck the post for Palace.
By the time the full-time whistle sounded on Merseyside, there was a growing sense of optimism and excitement about what the season might hold for Moyes' side, particularly if they can add one or two more players before the transfer window closes.
