Arne Slot’s side were comprehensively outplayed, their defensive frailties once more exposed, while their build-up play was sluggish and devoid of any real incision.
Let’s explore the best and most interesting comments from Liverpool fans.
James: A really disappointing display. The form of Mohamed Salah and Ibrahima Konaté is a real concern, particularly away from home. Perhaps they should be rested, much like Milos Kerkez, who looked far sharper after a spell on the sidelines. Florian Wirtz also needs to toughen up as he is far too easily dispossessed. He should be developed into a Martin Odegaard-type role behind Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak.
Jacob: Liverpool were dreadful. Even if the penalty hadn’t been given and Van Dijk’s goal had stood, it wouldn’t have changed much because we were all over the place. It was the same kind of self-inflicted chaos we’ve seen against Crystal Palace, Brentford and Manchester United. And was Ekitike even playing? He got so little of the ball that he might as well have gone for dinner. Liverpool simply couldn’t live with City’s press, and whatever confidence those wins over Aston Villa and Real Madrid restored has vanished again. Could this be the beginning of the end for Slot?

Andrew: It’s painful to watch the sharp decline of Salah. His pace and touch have gone. He rarely beats his full-back and shoots from absurd angles. Slot needs to give Federico Chiesa a proper run. There’s so much out of sync in this team and it’s baffling how many players have fallen so far below their usual levels.
Paul: Right now, Liverpool are miles off defending their Premier League crown. Despite the huge summer outlay, the team hasn’t clicked. There’s no energy, no cohesion. Some players seem to think they just need to turn up and the result will take care of itself. Slot carries a lot of the blame too – it’s his responsibility to fix this.
Chris: The lack of physicality is a major problem. Salah and Wirtz were too lightweight, while Konaté drifts in and out of games and his passing is poor. Salah’s failure to support Conor Bradley is leaving the defence exposed and he deserves to be dropped. Wirtz must either step up or step aside. A front three of Ekitike, Cody Gakpo and Alexander Isak would make far more sense.
Rahul: Bringing on Chiesa with seven minutes to go sums up Slot’s questionable decisions. Persisting with Konaté, who’s been mistake-prone all season, and splashing £125m on an injury-prone striker is indefensible. Slot’s time might well be up.
