Reports on Tuesday suggested the Scottish Premiership club were open to reappointing Gerrard but were waiting to confirm whether the former Liverpool and England midfielder was interested in a second spell at Ibrox. Discussions are expected to take place in the coming days as Rangers seek a replacement for Russell Martin, who was dismissed on Sunday.

Sources have indicated that Gerrard is among several candidates the club intend to speak to, with the board keen to conduct a thorough recruitment process. However, it is understood that Gerrard, who retains significant backing from supporters, has emerged as one of the leading contenders for the job.

Gerrard previously managed Rangers from 2018 to 2021, guiding them to their first league title in a decade. The club have not won the Premiership since his departure for Aston Villa in November 2021. He achieved a 14th-placed finish in his first season at Villa Park before being sacked 12 games into the following campaign.

The 44-year-old took charge of Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq in July 2023 but left by mutual consent in January. He was subsequently linked with a return to Rangers before Martin’s appointment in June.

In a recent interview with former England team-mate Rio Ferdinand, Gerrard expressed his desire to return to management, saying he wanted “to be at a team that’s going to compete to win, because I think that suits me better”.

Martin’s short spell in charge yielded just five wins from 17 matches, leaving Rangers eighth in the table and 11 points behind leaders Hearts.
