Alexis Mac Allister struck an emphatic winner as Liverpool began their Champions League campaign with victory over Atletico Madrid at Anfield.

Dominik Szoboszlai had levelled for Liverpool after Marcos Llorente initially put Atletico ahead, before Mac Allister fired home from outside the box to secure Andoni Iraola his first home win as Liverpool manager and his first Champions League victory in charge.

There was a slight scare for Liverpool when Barcola went down with cramp, forcing the Frenchman off on the hour mark, but Iraola's side held firm to secure a crucial three points.

Reaction from the Liverpool boss

Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola gave his post-match reaction to the media following the win. He was very complimentary about the Anfield atmosphere.

Liverpool's best players on the night

Alexis Mac Allister: All eyes were on the Argentinian after his press conference on Tuesday, but he did his talking on the pitch, scoring an absolute belter with his left foot shortly after the break.

Ronald Araujo: Retained his place at right-back after impressing against Ipswich. Battled well throughout, with one particular press helping to rouse Anfield. Produced a superb back-heel assist for Dominik Szoboszlai's equaliser.

Dominik Szoboszlai: Alvarez went past him too easily in the build-up to Atletico's goal, but he was in the right place at the right time to produce a lovely finish for Liverpool's equaliser.
