This was only their second win of a difficult Championship campaign

A day of celebration for Wednesday

Lifted by news of the completed takeover by the American consortium Arise Capital Partners shortly before kick-off, the hosts struck twice in the space of four first-half minutes through Nathaniel Chalobah and captain Liam Palmer to establish a commanding lead.

Karlan Grant reduced the deficit late on with a close-range finish, but the already relegated Wednesday held firm to hand James Morrison defeat in his first game as permanent manager, Albion’s third head coach of the season.

A first home league win of the campaign ensured Wednesday finished on zero points, effectively cancelling out their 18-point deduction and avoiding the unwanted distinction of becoming the first side in EFL history to end a season with a negative tally.

For Albion, it was only a second defeat under Morrison, including his earlier spell as interim, and leaves them 21st in the table, four points clear of the relegation places.

The West Brom fans and manager weren't happy

West Brom players applaud fans

After the match, one West Brom fan told us: "A shocking performance to end the season but the hard work had been done over the last few weeks. Safety was always going to be the priority."

The West Brom boss  James Morrison told local media: "I don't want to get away from what we've achieved, but obviously we've set standards now and we didn't meet them today from the first 10 minutes.

"I think it's the first time I've had to get angry again at half-time. We huffed and puffed second half, but still again we didn't value the ball how I would like."
