Merseyside | A Liverpool fan delves into the key points of their season
It has been a strange and often difficult few months for Liverpool fans.
Kop season ticket holder William G answers some key questions from Super Local Sports News.
Arne Slot's side return to Premier League action after the international week with only one win and three points from their last six matches. It's hard to believe that in September, they had an opportunity to go 8 points clear at the top of the table.
Which player is flying?
Dominik Szoboszlai. Liverpool’s standout performer by some distance and the one figure who has consistently exceeded expectations.
Which player is struggling?
There are a few candidates, but Alexander Isak stands out. He has reached mid-November without a goal in either the Premier League or the Champions League. There is also the curious reality that Hugo Ekitike, signed to deputise for him, appears better suited to the current set up. Isak needs fitness and a sustained run, but it has been a troubling opening to the campaign. We have also not seen Salah at his best during the last few months.
What do you think about the tactics?
Tactically, it all feels muddled. The system is hard to discern and Slot alters shape too often during matches. I want the manager to give fans more of Curtis Jones, who brings control to midfield. Keeping the ball is essential to coax the best from Florian Wirtz, who is struggling amid the numerous turnovers.
What were the expectations at the start of the season, and what are they now?
My expectations for the season began with hopes of winning the title, but have shifted to chasing the Champions League in the hope that form turns in time for the knockout stages. The league challenge feels over.
What has been the highlight of the season so far?
The match and win against Real Madrid was amazing and for a brief moment, it did feel like we were back to our best.
What was the worst moment?
The defeat against United was awful. Maybe we deserved more from the game, but we lacked a clinical edge to get us over the line. The defeat against Crystal Palace in the EFL Cup was also pretty bad.
One sentence to sum up how you're feeling right now?
I am worried that Liverpool have dismantled a winning formula without a clear reason.
