Cody Gakpo, who also struck the woodwork three times, briefly brought Liverpool level in the second half before Maguire’s decisive strike.

How do Liverpool fans feel about this defeat against their bigger rivals?

Karl: I do not think we looked like a balanced team until the 75th-minute substitutions, including Federico Chiesa. Slot has to stop selecting players based on market value, which is meaningless. Just field a side capable of winning and forget these overpriced prima donnas.

Mike: On another day, Cody Gakpo scores four and Liverpool win comfortably. But that would be masking deeper problems. It is understandable that so many new players need time to settle, but Milos Kerkez is not yet an upgrade. While the sale of Trent Alexander-Arnold is often highlighted, for me the departure of Luis Diaz has been more damaging.

Peter: Everything was so slow. The fast breaks that once brought us so much joy are gone. It feels as if the team have never played together before, as though they were chosen at random from a bus queue.

Ben: A poor first half but a strong response in the second. The opening goal should not have stood, given a serious head injury, and the referee should have stopped play. We were denied at least three goals by the woodwork. Clearly, we must stop the decline in the coming games.

Comments discussing the terrible run of form and what it might mean for the rest of the season.

Jimmy: For goodness sake. Liverpool have dismantled last season's championship-winning team and, regardless of the money spent on new players, Slot will need time to rebuild, which all true Reds fans know he has earned. The media is creating a crisis out of a setback. A top-four finish would be a good season for us regardless of ill-considered media predictions based on the first five games. It is a cliché but form is temporary, class is permanent.

Danny: Liverpool have not been terrible, they have been slightly off the pace. There is no-one better placed than Slot to address it. He needs to return to basics and field a side that has played the most minutes together. Joe Gomez and Andy Robertson, for example, can provide solidity at the back. Better service to Mohamed Salah is crucial, and the team must play to its strengths. The new signings need more time to adapt to the tactics, the pace and the physicality. Small margins will make the difference.

Marcus: This will be a real test for Arne. He won the league with Jurgen Klopp's team, and now he is building his own side. Riding high on the momentum of his predecessor's successes, he and the revamped squad will be granted time by the fans to reach expectations. However, without progress, without victories, without passion and desire showing on and off the pitch, how long will that goodwill last? Comparisons will soon be inevitable.
