Regis Le Bris’ team looked set to secure a hard-earned point in west London, only to seize all three when Talbi swept in from the edge of the area deep into stoppage time following a swift break upfield.
It marked Sunderland’s second away victory of the campaign and came despite Chelsea striking first. Another fantastic win in what has been a very impressive start to their first Premier League campaign since 2016/2017.
The key events
Alejandro Garnacho opened his account for the club with an impressive solo strike, giving the hosts an early advantage.
Wilson Isidor brought Sunderland level soon after, capitalising on slack Chelsea defending from a long throw to score his fourth of the season from close range.
After the interval the visitors appeared content to hold what they had, sitting deeper against the reigning Club World Cup winners. Chelsea dominated possession but failed to fashion many clear opportunities, committing extra bodies forward as the clock ticked down.
Sunderland punished that ambition in ruthless fashion. Substitute Brian Brobbey chased a long pass, held off his marker and teed up Talbi to secure a notable victory for the Black Cats.
The result moves Sunderland to within two points of leaders Arsenal, albeit having played a game more. Chelsea, who had the chance to go second, instead drop to seventh, edged out by Tottenham in the table.
