In completing this barely believable comeback, they denied the Clarets a first victory under Fabio Celestini and what would have been only their third league win of the year.

The Bluebirds had been on the receiving end of a remarkable fightback themselves when they surrendered a 3-0 lead to draw 3-3 with West Ham on Wednesday, but this time they turned the tables.

After withstanding intense early pressure from the hosts, Burnley took the lead with their first shot on target as Andreas Hountondji capitalised on a mistake by Cardiff centre-back Will Fish to roll the ball into the bottom corner.

Marcus Edwards doubled their advantage with a strike from the edge of the penalty area, before wasting a glorious opportunity to make it three just three minutes later, racing through on goal but chipping his effort over the bar.

There were jeers from the home crowd at that stage, but the mood improved when Ollie Tanner got a touch to Rubin Colwill's volley from a corner to halve the deficit before half-time.

However, despite another flurry of Cardiff chances early in the second half, frustration returned when more sloppy defending allowed Largie Ramazani to score Burnley's third with a deflected effort.

The Clarets made it 4-1 when Aaron Ramsey's cross was turned into his own net by Alex Robertson, but substitute Yousef Salech gave Cardiff a glimmer of hope when he came on and found the net.

Salech was then pushed in the back by Burnley substitute Connor Roberts, earning the Bluebirds a penalty which Jack Moylan converted.

Cardiff's players were roared on

The Cardiff City Stadium was already rocking when Salech headed in off the crossbar from Colwill's cross to draw the hosts level. But the atmosphere reached another level four minutes into added time when Robertson curled a superb long-range strike into the net to complete the turnaround and seal a 5-4 victory.

The result preserves Cardiff's unbeaten home league record this season and lifts them to 14th in the Championship table. Burnley, meanwhile, remain in the relegation zone, five points adrift of safety.
