Nottingham Forest opened their campaign with a 3-1 win over Brentford, followed by a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace, before suffering a bruising 3-0 defeat to West Ham United.

It was a frustrating start but one that did little to dent support for Nuno EspĂrito Santo, who had guided Forest to an unexpected seventh-place finish the previous season. That backing was short-lived, however, as news broke during the September international break that the manager had been dismissed.

Ange Postecoglou was swiftly brought in to replace him but the early signs have been far from encouraging. His tenure began with a 3-0 defeat to Arsenal and was followed by a dramatic 3-2 EFL Cup exit at Swansea, where Forest squandered a two-goal advantage.

The Burnley perspective

Scott Parker’s Burnley have endured a testing start to life back in the Premier League, losing three of their opening four matches and sitting 17th in the table, above the relegation zone only on goal difference.

Their return has been made no easier by the fixture list, which has already pitted them against Tottenham, Manchester United and Liverpool. The solitary win came against Sunderland, another newly promoted side expected to be in the survival scrap.

Even so, there have been positives to draw on. Burnley were in control against the Black Cats and showed enough against United and Liverpool to suggest they will not be easy opponents this season.
