With a penalty shootout looming, Sonne ran on to Mike Tresor’s perfectly weighted through ball and guided a low, left-footed finish into the net off the inside of the post.
A closer look at what happened
Burnley had made a dream start at Turf Moor, Aaron Ramsey giving them the lead in the fourth minute with a precise finish from Armando Broja’s pass. Derby, who dominated possession in the first half, drew level ten minutes before half-time when former Liverpool midfielder Bobby Clark completed a neat move with a composed finish.
Late in the first half, Zian Flemming saw a header saved by Derby goalkeeper Josh Vickers, while Loum Tchaouna’s angled effort went narrowly wide as Burnley sought to regain the lead. Tchaouna then struck the post with a low shot inside the area, but it was Sonne who finally broke Derby’s resistance in added time.
Clarets' patience eventually pays off

Despite making 11 changes to their starting XI, Burnley followed up Saturday’s 2-0 Premier League win over Sunderland with another victory, though they were made to work for it.
The Clarets took the lead with their first attack, Tchaouna’s cross into Flemming picked up by Broja, who showed composure to tee up Ramsey for the opener. Derby, themselves making eight changes from the team that held Bristol City on Friday, enjoyed plenty of possession but rarely troubled debutant Max Weiss in goal.
Their patience was eventually rewarded when RB Salzburg loanee Clark, who had more touches in the opposition box than any other player in the first half, finished confidently past Weiss.
Burnley had the better chances after half-time, but few would have begrudged Derby a penalty shootout against their top-flight opponents. In the end, Burnley’s quality prevailed as Denmark-born Sonne, who represents Peru at international level, secured a dramatic late winner to book his side’s place in the next round.
