Unbeaten Everton climbed to fifth in the Premier League as Thierno Barry's goal proved enough to secure victory over 10-man Ipswich Town.

Barry scored his fifth goal of the season in the 11th minute, showing good awareness to adjust his body and divert James Tarkowski's 35-yard effort into the net.

The French forward came close to adding a second later on when he met a cross with a diving header, but could not keep his effort on target.

Barry thought he had scored again with a header from a corner, only for the goal to be ruled out after Brennan Johnson, who had been positioned in front of goalkeeper Christian Walton, was judged to be offside.

Promoted Ipswich arrived looking for their third league victory of the campaign and had opportunities to level, but Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford produced several good saves to deny Emersonn, Abdul Fatawu, Julio Enciso and Abdoul Ouattara.

Emersonn and Leif Davis also squandered good chances when well placed.

Ipswich's hopes of mounting a comeback were dealt a further blow when Fatawu was sent off for two bookable offences. The second came after he went to ground under minimal contact from a James Garner challenge and was booked for diving.

Everton have now collected nine points from their opening five league matches, with two wins and three draws. They have also reached the last 16 of the Carabao Cup, where they will host Newcastle next month.
