The 74-year-old made the surprise announcement after Ryan Naderi's winner brought a miserable week to a close, with a series of underwhelming performances and disappointing results leaving the club under growing pressure.

Celtic went into the fixture having already lost at Ibrox in the Premier Sports Cup and suffered defeat by Ferencvaros in the Europa League. A disastrous second-leg collapse against LASK Linz had previously ended their Champions League hopes, while the back-to-back Old Firm defeats have further increased frustration among supporters.

The scrutiny has fallen firmly on O'Neill and, in a candid assessment of the situation, he admitted that he will now take time to consider whether he is capable of turning things around.
