Head coach Arne Slot and his players had come under growing scrutiny after a heavy FA Cup quarter-final defeat by Manchester City, followed by a subdued display in their Champions League loss at Paris St-Germain.
Slot made five changes ahead of Tuesday’s quarter-final second leg against PSG at Anfield and was rewarded with a sharper performance.
Rio Ngumoha and Mohamed Salah, who had been left out in Paris, both started and struck within four minutes of each other in the first half with similarly precise curling finishes.
The result lifts Liverpool into fifth, a position that now secures qualification for next season’s Champions League.
The win came against a backdrop of protests from Liverpool supporters
The Kop presented an unfamiliar sight, with the flags that usually define Anfield’s atmosphere removed as part of the protest.
Once the match was under way, a group of supporters marched in front of the stand carrying a large banner bearing the message: “No To Ticket Price Increases”.
Against this backdrop, Liverpool finally gave their supporters something to cheer after a season that has seen a sharp and unexpected decline from the champions.
