Sunderland celebrate in empty stadium

Newcastle looked set for a first home victory in this fixture since 2010 when Anthony Gordon put them ahead inside nine minutes.

Sunderland attempted to play out from the back but a misplaced pass from Luke O'Nien was seized upon by Nick Woltemade, who fed Gordon to finish confidently for his 17th goal of the season.

The hosts came close to doubling their lead before the interval, with Sven Botman heading against the post from Lewis Hall’s cross. Hall was one of five Newcastle players named in Thomas Tuchel’s latest England squad.

Sunderland fought back

Sunderland equalised in the 57th minute when Aaron Ramsdale failed to clear decisively. The ball was recycled into the area, Brobbey’s chest effort was cleared off the line by Dan Burn, but Chemsdine Talbi reacted quickest to convert the rebound.

Noah Sadiki then missed a chance to turn the game on its head, shooting straight at Ramsdale, but the visitors would not be denied.

Deep into stoppage time, Brobbey settled the contest, converting at close range after Ramsdale had saved his initial effort, sparking scenes of celebration among the travelling support.

The result secures Sunderland their first league double over Newcastle since the 2014-15 season.
