The visitors were closing in on just their second away league win of the season after a superb 30 yard free kick from Anton Stach put them ahead.

Stach struck in the 31st minute, shaping as if to deliver towards the far post before catching Emiliano Martínez out of position and curling the ball into the top corner.

Abraham was the hero for Villa

Villa eventually found a way back through Abraham, who returned in an £18.2m move from Beşiktaş in January. The striker made it 1 1 when he deftly flicked the ball into the net with his knee after Ezri Konsa had won the initial knockdown from a corner.

For Villa, who would have temporarily moved level on points with second-placed Manchester City with victory, the point was fully deserved after a dominant response to falling behind.

They went close to equalising in first-half injury time only for Karl Darlow to produce an outstanding save to deny Amadou Onana. The pressure continued after the break and Darlow again came to Leeds’ rescue with a fine one-handed stop that pushed Emiliano Buendía’s effort on to the post.

The resistance finally ended in the 88th minute as Villa secured a late equaliser.

Villa remain third, seven points adrift of leaders Arsenal, who face the north London derby at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. Leeds, meanwhile, are now six points clear of the relegation zone.
