Both teams arrived at Bramall Lane desperate for a victory after losing their previous three games, but neither could breach the opposition’s defence despite a number of promising opportunities.
Sam McCallum came closest for Chris Wilder’s side, seeing one header cleared off the line by Jimmy Dunne and another superbly saved by QPR goalkeeper Ben Hamer, while Sydie Peck struck the post late in the game.
For the visitors, top scorer Rumarn Burrell went nearest to breaking the deadlock, only for Japhet Tanganga to block one effort and Cooper to deny another.
No major lift for Sheffield United after Wilder return
Sheffield United had been counting on a lift from Wilder’s return in September, when a brief run of three wins in five games had suggested a new-manager boost, but defeats to Preston, Derby and Coventry have left them adrift of safety. A home game against a QPR side suffering four defeats in five fixtures offered a chance of relief.
After a slow opening half-hour, United began to exert themselves, with Danny Ings forcing a fine save from Hamer with a diving header before setting up chances for Jairo Riedewald and McCallum. Riedewald was blocked and Dunne cleared McCallum’s header off the line. Tyrese Campbell fired narrowly wide as the hosts finished the half on top.
QPR came out strongly after the break, with Karamoko Dembele cutting in from the right and curling a shot just wide of the far post. The visitors pressed, with Tanganga timing a lunging block to deny Burrell, who then had another strike saved by Cooper.
United finished the game on the front foot, with substitute Tom Davies sending Campbell through on goal, only for Dunne to produce a crucial tackle. Chiedozie Ogbene then set up McCallum at the far post, but Hamer produced a full-length save.
In the final stages, Peck forced his way through the defence and unleashed a shot that deflected off a defender and struck the post, leaving both sides to settle for a point.
