Bournemouth struck first after seven minutes when Amine Adli scored his first goal for the club from close range, capitalising after Evanilson diverted Antoine Semenyo's low cross against the post.
The visitors doubled their lead in remarkable fashion eight minutes later as Tyler Adams lofted a precise effort over Robin Roefs from inside the centre circle.
Sunderland were given a route back into the contest on the half hour when Alex Scott was penalised for catching Reinildo in the area and Enzo Le Fee converted the penalty.
The hosts were level within seconds of the restart, with Bertrand Traore drilling a low shot inside Djordje Petrovic’s near post.
Bournemouth briefly thought they had regained the lead when Evanilson tapped in another Semenyo cross, only for the flag to go up for offside.
Sunderland made the most of the reprieve and completed the turnaround in the 69th minute when Brian Brobbey rose to head home Le Fee’s corner.
Bournemouth pressed for an equaliser and Marcus Tavernier struck the bar with a late effort from the edge of the box.
Lewis Cook was then sent off deep into stoppage time for catching Noah Sadiki with an elbow, as Sunderland held firm to end their three match winless run.
