Marvin Ducksch tapped in from close range to give the home side an early lead. Jay Stansfield headed Blues into a 2-0 lead as Norwich struggled to make any sort of impact in the game before an excellent move that ended with Mathias Kvistgaarden pulling a goal back for the Canaries.
But Ducksch restored the two-goal lead from six yards just before half-time while Stansfield made it 4-1 not long after the restart.
Blues' third win in four games lifts them up to ninth in the table, a point off the play-off places. The loss leaves Norwich second from bottom of the Championship, five points from safety, and they have lost eight of their last 10 games, drawing the other two. This was a nightmare afternoon for former Rangers boss Philippe Clement on his first game as Norwich boss.
A fantastic day for Birmingham City on a milestone day
Marking their 150th anniversary, Birmingham showed little inclination to offer the new Norwich boss Clement or his players any gifts.
Demarai Gray tested Vladan Kovacevic with a sharp low strike inside the opening minute before playing a central role in the breakthrough moments later. He brought down Alex Cochrane’s raking pass with ease and slid a low ball across the six yard area for the unmarked Ducksch to steer in at the far post, his first goal since arriving from Werder Bremen in the summer.
Ducksch might have doubled his tally soon after but lifted an effort over from eight yards as a Norwich side with only one win in 14 matches struggled to settle.
Matters deteriorated further for the former Rangers manager midway through the half when Stansfield nipped in front of his marker to nod in Patrick Roberts’ cross from the right, the move sparked by a fine pass from Tomoki Iwata.
Birmingham thought they had a case for a penalty three minutes later when Ducksch appeared to be dragged down by Harry Darling in the area, but referee Anthony Backhouse waved away the appeals.
Norwich briefly rallied with a sweeping move that released Jack Stacey down the right. His cross was pushed out by James Beadle, only for Kvistgaarden to fire in from the edge of the box.

Oscar Schwartau saw a close range effort blocked soon after as the Canaries flickered into life, but their resistance did not last. Ducksch reacted sharply to turn in after Kovacevic parried Iwata’s header, restoring Birmingham’s two goal cushion.
Stansfield added a fourth with a crisp finish that cannoned in off the underside of the bar after Gray stole possession from Kenny McLean and threaded a perfectly weighted through ball into his path.
Iwata struck the post from distance with 25 minutes remaining, while Jovon Makama and Emiliano Marcondes were both denied by Beadle at the other end.
Marcondes and Duffy forced Beadle into further saves from successive corners as Norwich attempted to salvage some pride, but as the final minutes ticked away they mustered little beyond fresh concern for their supporters. Clement knows he faces a considerable task to revive their season.
