The Birmingham City Powerhouse in Bordesley Green is set to be visible from up to 40 miles away and, according to club chairman Tom Wagner, aims to serve as a beacon for excellence in the city.

Unveiled at a launch event on Thursday, the design signals an ambitious new chapter for the club and the wider area.

The stadium will be encircled by twelve chimneys and is expected to host a range of sporting and entertainment events. It will feature a retractable roof and a moveable pitch, creating a versatile venue capable of accommodating major fixtures and large-scale shows.

The steep bowl design is intended to heighten the match-day atmosphere, with markets, cafes, restaurants and play areas incorporated into the stadium itself.

Marking their 150th anniversary, the Championship club has set its sights on completing the project in time for the start of the 2030 to 2031 season. The scale of the plans underlines a desire to establish a venue that reflects both the club’s heritage and its long-term ambitions.

Big names help the club unveil the plans

A short film featuring former player Jude Bellingham and Arthur Shelby from Peaky Blinders was screened at the launch, held at Blues supporter Steven Knight’s Digbeth Loc studios. The new ground will form the focal point of the wider Sports Quarter, a major regeneration scheme led by Wagner, co-founder of Knighthead Capital Management.

In response to that, a number of fans have taken to social media.

One Birmingham posted on X/Twitter saying: “Finally, a new stadium design that’s not boring and soulless. Fair play that’s class.”

Gav posted: “Looks really nice and will have that wow factor, but we will have have to be in the Premier League for when it opens.”

Cal, a Villa fan, added on the same platform: “I’m a Villa fan but that is absolutely out of this world - fair play, can’t wait to see the finished product.”

Daya, another Villa fan, also had positive words for their Midlands rivals: “Villa Fan congratulating your club on this. The city needs it & its time for our two clubs to step up & start pushing each other. The retractable roof is a game-changer; no other UK club has one. NFL, Concerts and Boxing events etc incoming. Villa Park needs to raise its game”
