The captain collected the ball 30 yards from goal in the 95th minute, shifted it onto his left foot and unleashed a fierce strike into the top corner, leaving St Mirren goalkeeper Shamal George with no chance.

It was a brutal setback for St Mirren, who had created the better opportunities and produced a display worthy of at least a share of the points.

Conor McMenamin went close early on when he slid an effort wide from close range and later struck the post before the break. The winger also had the ball in the net after half-time, only for the flag to go up as Liam Scales inadvertently diverted the ball into his own goal.

Celtic found it difficult to break down a disciplined home side and managed only two shots on target, both arriving in added time.

McGregor, though, provided the decisive moment and used his celebrations to rally the travelling support at a time of rising discontent around the club.

St Mirren might still have taken something from the match, with Declan John denied by Kasper Schmeichel and Mikael Mandron firing wide late on.

Stephen Robinson’s side remain ninth and will face Celtic again at Hampden in the Premier Sports Cup final on 14 December.

O’Neill calls for Celtic unification, but fan unrest continues to linger

Scottish Premiership | St.Mirren v Celtic | Celtic red card protest

Interim manager Martin O’Neill has urged Celtic to find “some sort of unification” after supporters again voiced their frustration over the club’s direction during this dramatic.

Chants of “sack the board” came from the away section at both the start and the final whistle, the latest in a growing series of protests aimed at the hierarchy, who many fans feel have presided over a period of decline.

Results have dipped sharply this year, both domestically and in Europe. Celtic sit four points behind Hearts in the Scottish Premiership and missed out on a Champions League place after a poor play-off defeat by Kazakh champions Kairat. Their Europa League campaign has brought only one win from four matches.

Supporters have also criticised the timing of the club’s transfer business, with key attacking additions arriving only after Champions League elimination, a sequence they argue reflects deeper failings at board level.

O’Neill returned to the dugout following Brendan Rodgers’ resignation in late October, a departure that exposed tensions with majority shareholder Dermot Desmond. A revered figure at Celtic Park, O’Neill won seven major trophies during his spell as manager from 2000 to 2005 and twice lifted the European Cup as a player with Nottingham Forest.

His return has done little to quell dissent, with fans determined to push for change in the boardroom regardless of his standing.

The unrest escalated further on Friday when the club’s AGM was abandoned after shareholders jeered Ross Desmond, who had accused some supporters of acting like “bullies”.
