Ellis Simms and defender Liam Kitching each struck twice as the Sky Blues claimed a 10th win in 11 matches. Lampard’s side have amassed 40 points from 17 games and, perhaps more strikingly, have plundered 47 goals, 19 more than any other team in the division.

Simms and Kitching found the net inside the opening quarter of an hour to put Coventry firmly in control, but Boro, led on the touchline by interim coach Adi Viveash with incoming head coach Kim Hellberg watching on, mounted an admirable fightback. Morgan Whittaker halved the deficit before the interval and a Bobby Thomas own goal levelled matters early in the second half.

Tommy Conway then squandered a clear chance to put Middlesbrough ahead and the miss proved decisive. Kitching restored Coventry’s lead five minutes from time and Simms added another moments later to cap a superb victory, a result that drops Boro to third, below Stoke City.

Coventry continue to set the pace

It was a contest that shifted repeatedly before settling in favour of the Sky Blues. Their advantage at the top of the Championship now feels no accident. Lampard's side have been unforgiving in front of goal and few teams can keep up with that level of pressure.

Middlesbrough contributed plenty and will feel unfortunate to leave empty handed, yet the outcome underlines the fine margins that define this league.
