North East | Newcastle fans have been analysing cup over Spurs
Newcastle United 2 - 0 Tottenham Hotspur
Newcastle United reached the EFL Cup quarter-finals with a 2-0 win over Tottenham, thanks to headers from Fabian Schar and Nick Woltemade.
The much-changed hosts used Spurs’ own aerial strengths against them, taking control at St James’ Park. Schar opened the scoring midway through the first half, rising above Lucas Bergvall to head in Sandro Tonali’s corner. Despite protests from Spurs over the timing of the corner, the goal was allowed to stand. Woltemade then doubled the lead, nodding in Joe Willock’s cross to score his sixth goal of the season.
Tottenham had chances to respond, with Pape Sarr forcing a flying save from Aaron Ramsdale and Harvey Barnes hitting the bar with an acrobatic effort. Newcastle held firm to secure their place in the last eight for the fourth consecutive season, where they will face Fulham next.
The best comments from Newcastle United fans
Stephen: The first time I can recall, we actually had a squad capable of rotation, everyone contributed well, and that was even with three players absent.
Paula: Outstanding performance from Tonali, dominated the midfield, but credit also to Ramsdale - crucial saves, confident on the ball, and steadying the back four.
Anthony Gates: I do not think in my entire adult life following United we have ever had a deeper squad than we have at present, even with three key players out through injury in Wissa, Hall, and Livramento. Eddie Howe made eight changes to the side on Wednesday and they comfortably overcame a team from the so-called big six.
Karl: A very professional display, with strong pressing and energetic play. Slight concern that we didn’t fully close out the game by half-time. We need to be more clinical.
Georgie: We controlled most of the match. Tottenham had a few opportunities, but Ramsdale made key saves and distributed the ball well. Tonali covered every inch of the pitch and is my clear choice for man of the match.
Jim: Fringe players were given valuable minutes to maintain their match sharpness, and there were strong outings for Barnes, Willock, Krafth, and Ramsdale. Willock looked much improved from his previous appearance and even provided an assist for Big Nick’s goal. It was also important to see Krafth on the pitch to give Trippier a rest, even if only for 72 minutes.
