The hosts looked second best in a first half that saw Chelsea surge into a three-goal lead, with Andrey Santos, Tyrique George and Estevao all taking advantage of defensive lapses.
After the break, Wolves responded with renewed energy. Tolu Arokodare struck moments after the restart before David Moller Wolfe found the net for the first time in Wolves colours. Jamie Gittens restored then Chelsea’s cushion.
There was one final surge from Wolves. A long ball into the Chelsea area caused confusion, and when Agbadou managed to keep the move alive, Wolfe launched himself at the loose ball and forced it over Jorgensen and into the roof of the net, despite Marc Cucurella’s failed clearance.
Wolves continued to press for a late equaliser that never came, but departed with a sense of pride after taking the game to the wire.
Wolves fans proud of their players
It was striking to see Wolves supporters applauding their side off the pitch at the final whistle.
Barely 20 minutes earlier, frustration had poured from the stands as chants of “we’re going down” rang out, directed squarely at the ownership and manager.
By the end, though, despite falling short of an equaliser that would have taken the tie to penalties, the mood had shifted. The fans stayed behind to acknowledge a performance that, while not perfect, was full of effort and resilience.

That early anger was understandable. Wolves supporters are still grappling with the prospect of relegation, their team rooted to the foot of the Premier League and winless after nine matches, including a home defeat to newly promoted Burnley at the weekend.
Pereira’s position remains under scrutiny, yet this spirited response from a side featuring 11 changes may have offered a moment’s respite and something to build upon.
Questions will persist over the team’s quality but not over their resolve or the commitment shown by both players and manager.
