Many home fans boycotted the game in protest against Dejphon Chansiri's ownership of the Championship club, meaning there were around twice as many Mariners fans inside Hillsborough as Owls supporters.

Grimsby had the better of the first half and they eventually took the lead after the break when Jaze Kabia headed in Reece Staunton's corner.

Thereafter the visitors had opportunities to add to their advantage but one goal proved to be enough against a Wednesday team who made 10 changes from their Championship defeat by Bristol City on Saturday.

Grimsby are now in the fourth round for the first time since the 2001-02 season. The beleaguered home side's only two wins this season had come against Bolton and Leeds on penalties in this competition, but they could not find the equaliser to send this match to spot-kicks, with visiting goalkeeper Christy Pym not forced into a single save.

A closer analysis of what happened

Grimsby brought around 6,000 fans with them across from Lincolnshire to South Yorkshire and made a bright start against a very inexperienced Wednesday outfit.

Kabia shot narrowly wide and Kieran Green forced Ethan Horvath into a save in the opening 20 minutes but Henrik Pedersen's side held out until the break.

However, four minutes into the second half Kabia, who played for Truro City in the sixth tier last season, headed in a fine inswinging delivery from Staunton to give them the goal their dominance merited.

There was little in the way of a response from Wednesday and Jamie Walker and Charles Vernam both had chances to add to Grimsby's lead.

They will now hope for a good draw in the last 16 of the competition when it takes place next Wednesday.

The Owls will turn their attentions back to the league and their pursuit of a first Championship victory of the season when they visit Portsmouth on Saturday, while the Mariners travel to Barnet in League Two.
