Matty Russell opened the scoring with a try in the corner within the first 10 minutes, and Caius Faatili quickly doubled the lead. Harvey Smith sent the home side into the interval 18-2 ahead, while Seth Nikotemo and Jake Trueman added two more tries shortly after the restart.

Renouf Atoni and Josh Rourke continued the onslaught before Russell scored a second to secure a comfortable two points. Trinity’s win sees them move into the play-off places, aided by Hull FC’s 34-0 home defeat to Leeds Rhinos earlier on Saturday.

Wakefield now face Castleford Tigers, leaders Hull KR and struggling Salford Red Devils in their final three fixtures, and this performance suggests they are well placed to claim the sixth and final play-off spot. Huddersfield, by contrast, struggled on a rainy evening and suffered their 18th defeat of the Super League season.

The final score

Wakefield fans delighted

One supporter told us: "You know that the players and manager won’t get ahead of themselves. We still have three crucial games to play. We could achieve something special that would mark an excellent start to our return to the Super League.

Speaking about the performance, the same fan added: "It was a solid display. Defensively, we were strong and managed the game for long periods.”

A desperate season for Huddersfield Giants

We spoke to Oliver, a fan who travelled across West Yorkshire for the match. He said: “This has been a terrible campaign. I love my team, but I can’t wait for this to be over. Onwards to next year.”

Another fan told us: "The Huddersfield coaching team are falling short of expectations. Home attendances appear to have dipped below 3,000, with supporters walking away in frustration at the persistent approach that a victory every five or six games is sufficient to maintain a professional sports team."
