The home side started the game with a barrage of attacks inside the Newcastle half. Joe Taylor was sent through on goal but the offside flag was raised, and Marcus Harness had a well-struck shot blocked and put out for a corner.
From the resulting set-piece, Ruben Roosken delivered a high-dipping ball towards the back post, where Jack Whatmough leapt highest to nod Huddersfield into the lead, scoring his second goal of the season after netting against Reading.
Five minutes later, our lead was doubled from the penalty spot. Lasse Sorensen delivered a cross into a central area, which was taken on the chest by Leo Castledine who was bundled over by Newcastle skipper Cathal Heffernan. Marcus Harness sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to make it two for the Terriers.
Towards the end of the first half, Castledine dropped his shoulder on the edge of the box before bending a right-footed effort towards the right top corner, only to be denied by a diving save from Adam Harrison.
In added time, the Magpies pulled a goal back, as Scott Bailey’s edge of the box shot bounced off forward Sean Neave, sneaking the ball into the bottom corner and beyond Lee Nicholls.
Less than 60 seconds after, they scored their third of the evening as Taylor slid a ball across the box from the right. Roosken avoided contact with the ball, dragging his marker with him, leaving Castledine free at the back stick to hit the ball into the back of the net.
Just after the break, Taylor pounced a mistimed back pass from former Manchester City academy man Alfie Harrison. The forward stole the ball, took it round the away side's keeper Adam Harrison and essentially passed the ball into an empty net to make it four.
Taylor scored his second goal not long after. Castledine drove the ball through a dangerous central area before cutting back inside and playing the ball to a free Taylor inside the box. Taylor cut onto his left foot, keeping Miodrag Pivaš stuck to the turf, and then the forward slipped the ball under Harrison for the home side's fifth.
Huddersfield score their sixth and final goal | Newcastle United get a consolation
A few minutes later, they added a sixth goal of the evening, this time through an own goal. Castledine delivered a teasing cross that proved too tricky for Charlie McArthur, who inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.
The Black and White Army came close to a reply midway through the second half. Joe Brayson had an opportunity to shoot, but Sean Roughan was alert to the danger, blocking the attempt and conceding a corner.
Newcastle did manage a second goal, with Dylan Charlton converting an excellent assist from Neave. The midfielder drove down the right flank, evading David Kasumu’s attempt to close him down, and delivered a precise cross to Charlton, who struck the ball into the top corner.
The Terriers return to home action on Saturday to face Peterborough United.
