Full-back George Flanagan was the standout performer, scoring two tries and kicking three goals for a personal haul of 14 points, as the Giants outplayed their opponents from Perpignan. Jacob Gagai added a breakaway try in the first half, his ninth of the season, to help secure back-to-back wins for Huddersfield for the first time this campaign following their victory over Hull FC.

The result leaves them 11th in the table, level on points with Castleford in 10th, while Catalans slipped to a 15th defeat in a disappointing season.

A closer look at what happened as Huddersfield picked up an important win

The opening stages were uneventful until Flanagan broke the deadlock after 18 minutes, cutting through down the right from a set play to score under the posts. He missed a subsequent penalty attempt after Catalans’ Matthieu Laguerre was caught offside, but the visitors were soon reduced to 12 men when Bayley Sironen was sin-binned for a high tackle on Matty English.

Huddersfield doubled their advantage when Luke Keary’s loose pass was intercepted by Gagai, who sprinted clear from halfway before Flanagan added the conversion.

The setting for a Huddersfield Giants win

Catalans thought they had hit back early in the second half through Oliver Partington, but the try was ruled out for a Laguerre knock-on. They did finally score just after the hour when Keary’s kick found Tommy Makinson, who offloaded to Sironen to touch down, with Guillermo Aispuro-Bichet landing the extras from the touchline.

That proved the limit of Catalans’ attacking threat as Huddersfield’s defence held firm. Another offside infringement gave Flanagan the chance to extend the lead from the tee, and with seven minutes remaining the 20-year-old sealed victory, breaking through three tackles to score his second try and cap an assured performance.
