Arne Slot's side needed a late own goal to rescue a point after Sunderland threatened to pile even more pressure on the Liverpool head coach.

The best reaction from Liverpool fans

Mark: Passive in spells, frantic in others and never truly in command. The only player who warranted any real credit was Dominik Szoboszlai. I cannot recall the last time Salah consistently beat his marker and he now looks adrift, predictable, and short of ideas. It feels as though his time may be up. Sunderland were the sharper side.

Helen: Do not be taken in by the win over West Ham. Slot has stripped this team of its identity and last night underlined it, with players chasing shadows and offering little shape. There is no leadership on or off the pitch, and the collective spirit that defined Jurgen Klopp’s tenure has vanished.

Tom: The display was as subdued as the atmosphere inside Anfield, the quietest I have witnessed in almost half a century. Credit to the Sunderland supporters, who continued to sing. Liverpool’s passing and crossing in the final third were woeful, and for long stretches the players were static, offering little movement. Florian Wirtz’s goal was a moment of brilliance that will hopefully be the first of many.

Rashid: Tactically poor. We are playing as a collection of individuals rather than a coherent team. Sunderland demonstrated exactly how we should approach matches, with energy and purpose. The sideways, risk-averse football is reminiscent of Brendan Rodgers’ later days. At this rate, mid-table looks a genuine prospect.

Sunderland fans were more positive

Premier League | Liverpool v Sunderland | Pre match view from the away end

Gareth: It was encouraging to see us go to the home of the champions and remain committed to our approach. The team looked as though it relished the defensive work, treating it as part of the contest rather than a burden. We carried a consistent threat going forward as well.

Neil: A strong start and we put Liverpool under pressure from the outset. We showed respect but did not allow it to dictate our play. The aim was to bring something home from the match and we managed that. In hindsight it was unfortunate that an own goal brought them level. We might have won it late on but there was plenty to appreciate in the performance, particularly the control we showed in possession.
