Sam Hoskins gave the hosts the lead with a first-half penalty, his 100th goal for the club, but Joe Rafferty’s equaliser and Benson’s strike turned the match in Rotherham’s favour.
Hoskins thought he had opened the scoring earlier when he headed in Terry Taylor’s cross, only to be flagged offside, while Rotherham had the better of the early chances through Shaun McWilliams and Martin Sherif.
Northampton went in front midway through the first half after Zak Jules brought down Kamarai Swyer in the area, with Hoskins converting confidently from the spot.
There was to be some late drama
Sherif missed another good opportunity after the interval, but the visitors’ pressure eventually told when Rafferty turned in Jordan Hugill’s knockdown with 19 minutes to play.
